About

AENY, Spanish acronym for “Spanish Artists in New York”, is a multidisciplinary collective of artists joined not only by their common heritage, but also their mission: to produce cutting-edge, inter-disciplinary contemporary work that reflects the needs, longings and uncertainty of the cross-cultural society in which we live. Thus, AENY aims to bring together Spanish artists in all disciplines to examine the overlaps, collisions, similarities and differences between Spain’s tradition and modern New York culture, and to create a mutually enriching artistic dialog between the two countries.

AENY – El Puente, started out in October 2010 when a small group of artists from Spain gathered at the Spanish Benevolent Society (Centro Español) at 239W 14th Street,  in a first attempt to join forces and give identity and expression to the small (but growing) community of artists from Spain in New York.

A little more than a year later AENY, with the generous backing of the Spanish Consulate, debuted its first major production at the renowned The Duke on 42nd Street theater (NYC), entitled “Wearing Lorca’s Bowtie.”

Heralding in reviews from local, national and international press, AENY followed up in 2012 with the STAGED READING SERIES, an annual series of staged readings designed to introduce New Yorkers to some of the emerging playwrights from Spain and their most successful plays; the PLAY LOUD! in 2013, an annual music festival dedicated to exploring the intersections between music and story; and the MAIN STAGE in 2014, with the production of the play DIAS ESTUPENDOS which has been awarded for OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY AN ENSEMBLE CAST in the 2014 HOLA Awards for Excellence in Theater.

In 2013 AENY – El Puente changed its official title to AENY – Spanish Artists in New York, in order to streamline its multi-cultural base. Today our affiliated artists community includes actors, composers, dancers, directors, musicians, performers, playwrights, theater artists, and visual artists.

AENY is committed to maintaining an experimental, collaborative attitude throughout the production process, and establishing a stable and enriching relationship between Spanish and U.S. artists. Moreover, AENY seeks to enliven the New York arts scene through its focus on collaborative productions, which illuminate and examine the challenges of our society nowadays and the cultural bridge between Spain and the U.S. Throughout all of this, AENY believes firmly in building stable and mutually beneficial relationships with its audience, artists and benefactors.
