About ~ Gaatha was started by alumni from National Institute Of Design under incubation center (NDBI) at NID, Working on a craft documentation project at National Institute Of Design Ahmedabad, we realized that there is a gap between the ocean of skill based knowledge at one end and its seekers on the other. Documentations in the form of printed books and reports has been done many times but is often limited and inaccessible to the audience world over. It did not take us long to realize that all these wonderful craft stories needed to be told online, so that they have a larger reach and impact. This led to the birth of Gaatha website, which is a compilation of stories of crafts and craftsmen collected on traveling to some of the remotest villages of India.

Philosophy ~ The ‘Gaatha’ project was conjured to play the key role of storytelling and therewith bringing social and commercial benefits to the artisan settlements. We desire to become the instrument through which the artisans can directly connect with the global audience, to be the resource which helps craft sell not as objects but stories and ideologies. We are vying to make not just ’sales’ but ‘dialogues’ between the craftsmen and their patrons, encouraging ‘co-creation’ possibilities and a collective growth. We are committed to keeping all the good practices intact and all processes humane, just and ecologically balanced.

Above all, we want to identify and recognize the faceless artisan.
