About

Moving is among the top three stressors for kids, who thrive on routine, comfort and familiarity, according to the Employee Relations Council. To help reduce this stress for kids and their parents, Lori Attanasio Woodring, Ph.D. developed “My Very Exciting, Sorta Scary, Big Move: A Workbook for Children Moving to a New Home,” now available for $15.99 on www.amazon.com and at https://www.createspace.com/4334684.

Woodring, a licensed psychologist in New York and Connecticut, was inspired to create the workbook after moving with 18-month-old twins to London and back to Connecticut five years later with four children under the age of 7.

With charming illustrations by Timm Joy – and room for kids’ own depictions of their feelings and emotions – the unique workbook walks kids ages 5-11 step by step through the moving process, including understanding change, strategies for managing emotions, partaking in a new adventure and more.

“More than 40 million people, many of them children, move every year, but that doesn’t mean that moving is easy. It can be incredibly stressful and challenging for kids of all ages, something I learned from my husband who moved 12 times as a kid, and especially from my kids during our international moves,” said Woodring. “I wanted to create something that kids genuinely could use to process their emotions about moving and move forward with a sense of excitement. Through drawing and activities, kids have the opportunity to become active participants in the process of moving to a new home.”

“My Very Exciting, Sorta Scary, Big Move: A Workbook for Children Moving to a New Home” includes:

• A discussion of the difference between a house and a home
• An opportunity for kids to write, draw, think, feel and share
• An outlet for kids who feel sad, mad or worried about the move
• Tips on saying goodbye
• A sense of excitement about the new home
• Tips for making new friends
• And a certificate of completion

“As the workbook reminds kids, ‘no matter where you live or how different your life may be, you will always be loved by your family!’” Woodring added. “I wanted to create a workbook that would help kids feel safe, secure, understood and loved throughout the challenging process of moving to a new home, and am thrilled to release ‘My Very Exciting, Sorta Scary, Big Move.’”
