About

Science North is Northern Ontario’s most popular tourist attraction. An architectural wonder, its two giant stainless steel snowflakes are linked by an underground tunnel carved out of two billion- year-old rock.

Internationally renowned for its personal approach to science education and its friendly resident Bluecoats, the Science Centre is filled with fun and imagination.

Dynamic Earth, Home of the Big Nickel, is a mining and geology centre that allows you to work and play with real mining equipment and technologies!  This Science North attraction opened in 2003 and is among the top ten science centres in Canada!

At Dynamic Earth, the main attraction is an underground tour that takes you
below the Earth’s surface, 7-storeys down!  As you are lowered into the dramatic Inco Chasm you’ll be amazed by a state-of-the-art multimedia show projected on the rock walls.  A simulated dynamite blast, and the chance to get up close to real mining equipment makes this tour a one-of-a-kind experience.

Back on surface the kids can put their new-found knowledge to work in the Explora Mine, a three-level scaled down version of a real working mine.  They’ll slide through a rock tunnel, operate a conveyor belt and move rocks, all while using tools and equipment that are just their size.  In the meantime you can test your skills with the big machines as you manipulate a remote controlled rockbreaker and locomotive located in Dynamic Earth’s underground mine.  You can also try out the new Caterpillar excavator simulator and track the movement of other visitors underground using a digital communication system.

Rocks to Riches is a new multimedia experience in the Xstrata Nickel Gallery and with one visit you’ll never see your kitchen sink or plumbing pipes the same way again! This walk-through theatre features state-of-the-art presentation technology that takes you step-by-step through the processing of nickel and copper, from the “mill” to the “smelter” and then the “refinery.”

With two galleries full of fascinating interactive exhibits, and new special exhibits,  there’s always more to explore!  Don't forget to take your picture next to the famous Big Nickel!
