About

David Garcia Hong Kong Charities exists  solely to help publicize the efforts of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents Club in the numerous charitable activities it undertakes, to promote the welfare of the children of Hong Kong through sustained quality education.

David Garcia is the Founding Chairman of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club Hong Kong Charity Fund.

FCC HK operates a charity in Hong Kong for Po Leung Kuk, a local orphanage, raising funds for the education of Hong Kong orphans.

In an institutional capacity, Po Leung Kuk provides the children:

   Integrated Family Services
   Child Care Services
   Children and Youth Services
   Rehabilitation and Youth Services

The orphanage also provides other social services that are not directly related to children.

FCC’s fundraising efforts for its Po Leung Kuk beneficiaries culminate with an annual charity ball. As fundraisers go, this charity ball has become integrated into the fabric of Hong Kong society,  and has  become one of the biggest and best charity events in the Hong Kong calendar.

This comes as no surprise, because the charity ball is well known for providing noteworthy entertainment to its donors and sponsors.

The line-up of artists who have generously thrown their support behind the charity belong to various genres, ranging from pop to rock to jazz and many others more in-between.

Highly regarded international artists who have shared their time and talent for the Hong Kong FCC’s charitable causes have included Martha Reeves, The Supremes, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, Blondie, Jimmy Buffett, Sergio Mendes, The World Classic Rockers, The Charlie Daniels Band, Creedence Clearwater and the Doobie Brothers, among others..

In addition,  a number of just as well-respected home grown performers and ardent supporters of the Po Leung Kuk, such as Jacky Cheung, Steven Chow, Twins and Joey Yung have not only donated their time to support the promotional events but also to appear as guest artists at the HK-FCC’s  ball.

The ball has been able to raise millions of Hong Kong dollars for the Foreign Correspondents’ Club Charity Fund, with the money being used in two ways to support the children from the Po Leung Kuk orphanage.  The first is to provide the neediest students from broken or low-income families with scholarships to attend university or college. The second way is, to provide more than 300 young children ages 2 – 18 who are in residence at the Po Leung Kuk Orphanage with language training in English and Putonghua through the FCC Language Training Centre.

As explained further by David Garcia, “We also have teachers visiting group homes so that we can reach as many kids as possible in the system. We have  opened a new school in Lei Muk Shue, one of the poorest areas in Hong Kong. The school also has a Social Welfare Center for the children. They can walk in at anytime and confer with a social worker without having to go through the system.”

The children that David refers to, are the neediest kids in Hong Kong, orphans who have experienced abandonment and broken homes, with little or no family and financial support.

The annual charity ball is able to raise the much-needed funds for the children, due to the attendance of numerous FCC members, among them bureau chiefs and media heads, as well as  CEOs of banks, insurance companies, and diplomats, among others, who all give wholehearted support in fundraising.  Major sponsors include Merrill Lynch, ING, Fortis, JP Morgan, HSBC, with their CEOs often flying in from all over the world to attend the ball.
