Body & Soul Dance Theatre, Inc.

Body & Soul started in 1983 when Barbara Sloan and Gilda Pianelli became artistic partners while working for Jack Penrod of the famous Penrod’s on the Beach and the 1980’s televised sensation Flashdance contests.

This commercial venue gave birth to Body & Soul Dance Theatre with Barbara Sloan as artistic director and Gilda Pianelli as business administrator and lighting designer. The company remained a very commercial dance company entertaining at clubs, hotels, condo circuits, and private parties.

Body & Soul was one of South Florida’s most established modern dance companies; they appeared at the Colony Theatre, Bailey Concert Hall and theatres from New York to South America.

In current times Body & Soul Dance Theatre has a new artistic director, Sheila Scanlan, and a Board of Directors that assist in guiding the company. Since its rebirth in 2002 as a not-for-profit dance organization, Body & Soul Dance Theatre has performed in venues across the South Florida area.
