About

The Boston Flute Academy (BFA) was founded in 2008 by Boston flutist Judy Grant.  The school is possibly the first of its kind, offering a conservatory curriculum designed specifically for flutists.   BFA began as an accelerated training program for flutists seeking professional performance careers and has more recently expanded into a school which serves students of all ages and levels of ability and interest.  In just a few short years, BFA has created a flute community where the finest flute teachers and world class guest artists are accessible to all.

BFA teaches music classes for all levels, from the young novice up to adult students and professional players. In addition to traditional flute and piccolo lessons, BFA brings a visionary approach to ensemble training, studio classes, seminars, master classes, listening classes, music theory, and even teacher-training.

BFA is recognized for its elite high school students who consistently perform at a national level.  From the 4th grade through college, BFA flutists progress through the fast-track Preparatory, Repertory, Conservatory, and Young Artist Programs.  BFA graduates are recruited by the world’s finest conservatories and universities, such as Juilliard, Eastman, Cleveland Institute of Music, Curtis Institute, and the Royal Academy of Music in London.

BFA’s Ensemble and Seminar Program provides ensemble experience for beginning, intermediate, and advanced players and at the same time offers inspiring workshops on a wide range of educational topics. This ground breaking initiative supplements the private lesson and strives to build more informed and more complete musicians at every age. The Ensemble & Seminar program is open to all flutists, regardless of where they study privately.

The BFA Extension Division is a relaxed program where flute students can take private lessons and progress at their own pace. A philosophy of generosity and mutual support is important in all programs at BFA.

The BFA makes its home at the beautiful Maliotis Cultural Center in Brookline, MA.
