The Chicago Bach Ensemble (“CBE”) was formed in January 2012. Since then it has performed four cycles of J.S. Bach’s cantatas on modern instruments. In September 2013, CBE became the recipient of a Three-Year Grant by The Mac Arthur Fund for Arts and Culture at The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.
At this time, CBE is embarking on new and exciting territory: the ensemble will turn to baroque instruments, baroque interpretation, an organist who performs from the original figured bass in the conductor’s score, and performance with baroque tuning at 415hz. We will use typical period ensemble size for voice and instruments. Baroque music is a style of Western classical music that was popular between 1600-1750. J.S. Bach’s music presents the high point of German Baroque Music at the end of the Baroque period as he was born in 1685 and died in 1750.
The audience will have the chance to hear Bach’s cantatas in Chicago area churches as close to an original Bach performance as we can imagine it. This unique and outstanding experience is made possible by Maestro Ruben Dubrovsky, a baroque specialist conductor, who will lead our ensemble and conduct Cycle 5 in three different area churches on November 6th, 7th and 8th.
