About

Los Angeles, CA- Today, a Los Angeles based group, who has chosen to remain anonymous, launched their #LabelMeHuman Project via social media campaign. The mission of the group is to allow people to expose and destroy any such labels society has given them by creating short video proclamations of their personal experiences that end with an appeal to be seen as human instead.

The #LabelMeHuman Project involves participants creating Instagram videos in which they write down any derogatory labels they have experienced first hand, then creatively destroy those labels and challenge three others to “shed their labels” as well. The group is encouraging anyone and everyone who has ever been labeled unfairly to “shed their labels” in the most creative ways possible and dare their friends to do the same.

“We saw a problem with how people were being generalized and mistreated, largely based on their appearance and group stereotyping, and wanted to figure out a way to bring this issue to light. We also noticed that a lot of people simply don't seem to care that others are being labeled in the first place. Our focus is not centered around one particular race, gender, political affiliation, sexual orientation or socioeconomic circumstance, but rather, all people and the universal fundamental of humanity that is our right to be seen and treated equally. The message of our campaign is simple: ‘This is how we feel we are labeled and we want it to stop. We are all human, and therefore, deserve to be treated equally.' "

The #LabelMeHuman campaign has garnered a considerable amount of support from casual social media users to celebrities, activists and online media outlets alike, and has resulted in what the group hopes to be continued insistence of re-defining what human rights are in 2014 and beyond. The project was started as an attempt to initiate progressive dialogue about human rights being inalienable to every person, regardless of situation or background. In addition, the campaign seeks to continue to shed light on the inconsistencies of labeling that are so often used to justify injustice.

Along with the Instagram videos, the #LabelMeHuman Project has both Twitter and Facebook handles that further promote the objective to eradicate indifference and raise awareness about wrongful labeling. The website, labelmehuman.org, spells out both the mission and vision of the social campaign and will be continuously updated with new and relevant content.

As of now, the Los Angeles based group has chosen to remain anonymous in effort to focus all attention on the message of the campaign. They plan to delve further into the cause through a series of initiatives aimed at moving the conversation of human rights forward. For more information or to join the movement, please visit:
