About

Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance is a tax-exempt organization by the IRS under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Trails continue to be an integral part of Michigan’s healthy and prosperous future.  Michigan is the national leader with over 2,500 miles of trails throughout the state. Our signature event is The Michigander. Named one of the "Top 10 Multi-Day Rides in America" by Bicycling Magazine, the Michigander combines beautiful trails, Pure Michigan scenery and quaint towns in regions across our state. Proceeds from this 2-day, 6-day and 8-day bicycle tour help fund our trail initiatives while showcasing the trails.

Michigan Trails is working to develop five Great Lake-to-Lake Trials across the state. Route #1, a 315-mile trail from South Haven to Port Huron, is expected to be completed by the fall of 2019. To help all trail users enjoy Michigan's trails, we publish the Michigan Trails Map & Directory found in Michigan's Welcome Centers.

Michigan Trails & Greenways Alliance was founded in 1986 and has undergone several name changes along the way; Michigan TRRails Alliance and  the Michigan Chapter of Rails to Trails Conservancy. When Rails to Trails decided to regionalize its field offices, and the Michigan Field Office determined the best way to continue to assist Michigan’s trail projects would be to form its own statewide nonprofit.  Michigan Trails was reborn and began assisting with key rail-trail projects and with communities wishing to extend their trails through the use of other linear facilities for connections such as utility corridors, road rights of way, public land, and other linear resources to grow trail networks.

Located in Old Town Lansing, we continue to foster and facilitate the creation of an interconnected statewide system of trails and greenways for environmental and cultural preservation purposes.  We work at both the state and local levels by assisting public and private interest in trails and greenways planning, funding, development and maintenance.  We work to build public support for trails and greenways development through events, membership, education, information and advocacy activities.

The Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance is an affiliate of the Michigan Fitness Foundation.
