Surgical Lighting Developer finding new ways to Shine -Green.
(Ft. Myers, FL) Ft. Myers, FL based, Cool View LLC hopes to combine the green of profitability and the green of environmental responsibility in the world's first line of LED surgical lighting products. Part of a newly created class of high intensity, Light Emitting Diode or LED's, Cool View and it's scientists have solved the intensity and color issues that have prevented other manufactures from entering this market. The green advantage comes from the fact that LED's have no bulbs. They produce light through electronic pulses and not the mercury containing bulbs of other surgical lighting sources.
And their timing couldn't be better. Tighter and more environmentally friendly laws are being championed in almost every state in the nation. The state of Florida has recently revised its environmental protection statutes to require that replaced mercury containing bulbs be returned to their original packaging and delivered to an appropriate recycling center --or face a hefty fine(1). For those who chose not to comply, punitive damages can amount to up to ten thousand dollars per occurrence. All combined it is pushing hospitals and physicians to evaluate their surgical lighting alternatives and Cool View to ramp up their production.
"For years hospitals and surgeons have relied on xenon and other light sources with mercury containing bulbs. LED lights through electronic light production, have no bulbs to replace and therefore no mercury." David Medinis, Cool View, LLC
Due to the critical nature of the lighting, the newly developed lights had to perform. The developers, through largely patented designs, have created consistently bright and naturally white lights and done so without using any mercury in the manufacturing. Cool View claims their lights can produce up to a 12,000 lumen output and a true 6500° color temperature. This translates to not only an environmentally friendly light but one that allows for a more contrasted picture and better color recognition.
Additional research has shown the optic nerve and the vision center of the brain receive a more contrasted picture with the appropriate volume of light. This leads to sharper image clarity and less eye strain for the operating physician.(2)
"The Novalite Micro is so light and bright it's unbelievable. The other units I have used are not even in the same League" Dr. Joseph Mazza, SWFL Regional Medical Center, Lee Memorial and Health Park
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection in their paper, Managing Mercury- Best practices for Florida Medical Facilities, said," "Studies have identified Florida hospital incinerator emissions as a significant source of mercury."(3) The United States Clean Air act put mercury on a list of toxic pollutants that need to be controlled to the greatest possible extent. Mercury is known to cause tremors, delirium, hallucinations, and suicidal tendencies as well as other significant other health issues.(4)
"There is no such thing as a small step in the reduction of the utilization of mercury. It is the result of a changing mindset that we are conscious of the effects of the products we use every day." Tom Petcoff, Hawkeye Distributing
The Cool View LED lights are available in both fixed and portable in room systems as well as several models of headlamps. Newly developed overhead lighting systems are scheduled for release in 2010. Current lighting products range from 225 lumen output to 12,000 lumen output. All lights have been designed to mirror the color of bright daylight at a 6500° color temperature.
