Small businesses have invested in their websites to sell on-line, tapping their small reserves in hopes off expanding their customers base beyond walk-in traffic.
However, major search engines have re-purposed bibliographical ranking (where the same context references on a subject all reference a particular source in their bibliography) to website ranking, called PageRank by Google inventor. This method has made Amazon the top retailer in the U.S. because they were one of the first to have a complete e-commerce website with a shopping cart when popular Google rolled out PageRank. Since then, scores of small businesses have disappeared because they don't appear in top search results. Many major retailers have entered bankruptcy due the Google-Amazon team. Google is an Amazon Affiliate and is likely the top recipient of affiliate dollars.
We created GimmeUSA with a ranking system that has no bias. It uses Apache Solr unmodified with post-search ranking boost for businesses that we have absolute knowledge to still be operating.
