About

Interstages, Inc. provides opportunities for early adolescent girls in low-income neighborhoods to discover talents, strengthen and develop skills, and heighten self-awareness, setting the stage for a successful transition into young adulthood. To fulfill this mission, Interstages operates a daily afterschool youth development program for middle school girls in Southeast Washington, DC. Three key program elements make the Interstages model uniquely effective in engaging this group of youth:

(1) Exclusive focus on early adolescent girls,
(2) Academic personalization, and
(3) Connecting to history through music and the arts.

Founded in 2005 by two former DC Public Schools teachers, Interstages currently enrolls 18 girls, maintaining a cap of 6 girls per program staff member. Spin-off programs include the Interstages Alumnae Initiative for program graduates now in high school and Junior Interstages, an introductory program offered to 5th-grade girls each spring.
