About

John Hannan is a thirty-seven-year veteran of the non-profit world. During his career John has worked to address the problems of several areas of civil society.
Most recently he supervised the management of over 650 health, education environmental and economic development projects conducted by more than 3,000 international volunteers working side by side with residents of approx. 40 rural communities in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
At the National Audubon Society, he helped launch the Flyway Strategies’ fund raising and was part of the planning team for the Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Conservation Plan. At the Greentree Foundation he helped protect thousands of acres of Long Leaf Pine forest in southern Georgia and turned a gilded age Long Island estate into a Center for International Peace Conferences.
At New York Cares he created volunteer programs to assist the poor and disabled in NY City.  During the 1980s and 90s, working with a variety of organizations, he helped promote economic stability, human rights and sustainable development for rural communities in Central America, and at Riverkeeper he worked to protect the Hudson River and its surrounding watershed.
Growing up, Hannan lived in Ireland, England, Brazil, and Argentina.  He has traveled extensively through the Caribbean, Central and Latin America.  Hannan has been a serious bird watcher and ornithologist for 30+ years.  He currently resides with his wife and two children in the Northern Westchester County town of Somers, NY.
He is a frequent presenter at conferences and forums on the topics of volunteerism, fund development, conservation, and technology uses for the nonprofit sector.
A 1980 graduate of St. Michael's College in Vermont, Hannan holds a master's degree in non-profit management from the New School of Social Research.
Hannan possesses a long history of building legislative, scientific and community based solutions to bird conservation issues.  Key attributes he demonstrates are:
At each place of employment, he has utilized his knowledge of the donor world to successfully increase development results by more than 100% within a few years’ time;
He has successfully led staff and volunteers, significantly increasing program successes, morale, and team retention;
Working strategically, he has built local, national, and international partnerships to protect and preserve critical eco-systems, most often focusing on the birds that use these habitats.
With a large network of corporate, foundation, nonprofit and political allies at all levels, he can bring the resources needed to further conservation legislation.
