About

MARE is a center of excellence in scientific research, technological development, and innovation, focused on addressing challenges related to all aquatic ecosystems, from watersheds and adjacent areas to estuaries, coastal marine ecosystems, and oceanic ecosystems. Founded in January 2015 as a multi-institutional center, MARE has a national territorial presence in Portugal and brings together a wide diversity of skills, capacities, and resources.

Using an integrative approach, MARE is organized into two ecosystem-oriented Research Domains - hydrographic basins and coastal systems and ocean - and seven Thematic Lines that allow for the identification of priority research areas: 1. Hydraulics, Hydrology and Sedimentary Environments; 2. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning; 3. Aquaculture and Fisheries; 4. Environmental Risk; 5. Biotechnology and Resources Valorisation; 6. Technological Tools for Exploration and Monitoring; 7. Governance and Literacy.

MARE contributes to the understanding of the functioning of all aquatic ecosystems addressing environmental challenges; fosters the discovery of new knowledge and technologies through research and development, and interdisciplinary collaboration; provides evidence-based information to decision-makers; and plays an active role in educating future generations and today's professionals, increasing ocean literacy and disseminating aquatic sciences
