About |
The American automobile had been a part of Mike Hooker’s life since he was eight years old. He had toy cars and trucks of all sorts as a little boy, model cars as a teenager, and hot rods as an adult. Mike turned his first wrench on his 1966 Chevy II Nova in 1973 and has been turning them ever since, either as a hobby or as a profession, military or civilian.
Mike worked on other people’s cars “just for the fun of it” while serving in the U.S. Air Force. After leaving the service, he attended Southern Illinois University’s Automotive Technology program, graduating in 1981 with his associate’s degree.
He worked in four Chevrolet dealerships, one in the parts department and three in the service department. He serviced all facets of cars and light-duty trucks: from squeaks, rattles, and leaks to engines, transmissions, and differentials, and everything in between.
In 1984, he went back to college at night and on weekends, graduating in 1988 with his Bachelor of Science degree in vocational education studies, also from Southern Illinois University, to teach post-secondary automotive technology. Later, he earned two Master of Arts degrees.
During his study of vocational education, he determined that he also wanted to become a writer. He studied the art and craft of writing and had several pieces published; then he combined his passion for the American automobile with his passion for writing.
His zeal for street rods, hot rods, street machines, American muscle cars, off-road vehicles (including all forms of racing), motorcycles, and restorations of all makes and models drove him to his desire to write direct response, marketing, and public relations copy for automotive companies that manufacture and/or sell high performance parts and equipment.
Mike is an active member of Toastmasters International. When he is not writing, he enjoys reading both fiction and nonfiction, watching car shows and sports on television, and spending time with his wife, Donna, in Fort Worth, Texas. They have one grown daughter, Shauna, who serves her country as an officer and registered nurse in the U. S. Army. Visit Mike’s website at www.automotivecopypro.com.
