First released in 2008 as the result of an R&D project, OpenNebula has become the only European open source cloud orchestration and management technology. As a Virtualized Infrastructure Manager (VIM) and IaaS platform, it combines support for virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters with federation, multi-tenancy, and the automatic provisioning of cloud and edge infrastructure resources for building private, public, and hybrid clouds.
Many of the features offered by OpenNebula are the result of the support received from the European Commission through participation in multiple research, development, and innovation actions, as well as close collaboration with a wide community of research and industry organizations.
From 2019-2022, thanks to the H2020 project ONEedge, OpenNebula has been transformed into a vendor-neutral, application-agnostic orchestration tool for the datacenter-cloud-edge continuum, incorporating a new architecture for deploying multi-provider, highly-distributed edge clouds.
With more than 5,000 organizations running an OpenNebula cloud worldwide (including large federated environments managing hundreds of thousands of cores), the project’s community is made of people from many different sectors, covering industries such as media, telecommunications, gaming, finance & banking, public sector, IT hosting, and HPC.
