About

The Phoenix Public Works Department is responsible for providing trash, recycling and other waste diversion services to more than 380,000 households in the 6th largest city in the U.S., Phoenix, Ariz. The department owns two transfer stations, two materials recovery facilities, a landfill in operation and is in the process of building its own composting facility. In 2013, the city launched the Reimagine Phoenix initiative with a goal to increase the city's waste diversion rate by 40 percent by 2020. This initiative has prompted the implementation of two more waste diversion services for residents, plus the plans to develop a resource Innovation Campus (RIC). The idea of the RIC is to invite waste-to-product business to consider a partnership with the city of Phoenix in finding ways to transform waste products into new products for various businesses and individual consumers. RIC aims to be a hub where sustainability solutions are born and innovations flourish.
