Refunk'd

Refunk’d is a small, independent business based in the heart of rural Cumbria. Set up by me, Ursh Stevens in 2010, our work is eclectic, vibrant and offers one off vintage pieces with a wow factor. We work with customers to create something unique for their home, office or work space.

My passion for design and furniture has grown since childhood - with a dad and step mum in the antiques trade I guess you could say it has always been in my blood. In my twenties and thirties I travelled the world, working for BA and at several top hotels in the UK and Germany, but a move back to Cumbria saw me being drawn back into the furniture trade and I embraced all things vintage, quirky and unusual!

My inspiration came from redesigning my children’s bedrooms – I wanted to create a quirky and unusual space for them to work, sleep and play in, but couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for with the right price tag. So I decided I could do something amazing myself and set about buying mid century furniture that was simply being discarded and more often

than not sent to landfill for being too ugly. All it required was a little love, care and creativity.

This started me thinking about all the things that we throw away on a daily basis and the fact that these still had a useful life span, they were built for longevity rather than fashion but surely the two could be combined? So off I went ratching (Cumbrian for looking/scouring) and I soon discovered it wasn’t just furniture that was discarded but all sorts of interesting things that could be repurposed and so Refunk’d grew and grew!

Today no skip, scrap yard or old barn is safe from my eagle eye!

I now have the chance to do something different, something I am passionate about and I get to play with paint and power tools ?
