About |
Sam’s OATH is a Texas nonprofit supporting a national movement to reduce stigma around substance use and mental health, aimed at strengthening healing through openness, authenticity, transparency, and community. Inspired by Sam, whose life was marked by honesty, courage, and hope in the face of substance use disorder, Sam’s OATH exists to help people speak the truth about what they have lived through, because what’s hidden doesn’t heal.
Substance use impacts not only the person struggling, but also parents, siblings, partners, children, friends, coworkers, and entire communities. Too often those experiences stay private, wrapped in shame, fear, confusion, or the belief that talking about it will make things worse. Sam’s OATH is built on a different belief: healing begins when we stop pretending, and when we replace silence with compassionate truth.
At the heart of the movement is Sam’s OATH, a simple commitment to approach substance use and mental health with Openness, Authenticity, Transparency, and a focus on Healing. Taking the OATH is not about judgment, blame, or perfect answers. It is a promise to show up honestly, to listen without shame, to speak with courage, and to choose connection over isolation.
Sam’s OATH also creates a place for real stories. Through Sam’s Wall, people are invited to share how a loved one’s substance use or mental health issues have affected them, either anonymously or with their name or initials. These stories are not curated for perfection. They are shared to remind others they are not alone, to reduce stigma, and to help people find language for experiences that are often difficult to describe. Contributors can also share a general location, which helps the community see how widespread this journey is, and how many people are walking it together.
The vision is a growing network of individuals, families, and communities who believe honesty is a path to healing. Sam’s OATH aims to encourage supportive conversations, promote compassion for those affected by substance use, and create space for grief, recovery, and hope to exist side by side. Whether someone is in active addiction, in recovery, supporting a loved one, or living with loss, Sam’s OATH welcomes them with dignity and understanding.
Sam’s OATH is building a public, healing community grounded in a repeatable message: what’s hidden doesn’t heal. By choosing transparency and telling the truth out loud, including through music, we help one another take the next step, toward support, toward connection, and toward joy again.
