About

It is an unconscionable loss that a child dies anywhere in the world from a heart defect (congenital or acquired) due to lack of resources for proper care, when a child living in the most remote area of the US with the same heart defect would be easily cured.  SoH seeks to narrow that disparity by living up to its motto: “It’s Not What We Bring.  It’s What We Leave Behind”.

SoH sponsors volunteer surgical teams from major teaching children’s hospitals in the US and Europe to travel to developing Latin American countries and operate on children, equipping and supplying the local hospital as needed.  While there, the teaching team works in collaboration with the local medical team to provide training in and access to modern procedures.  That training provides the seeds for sustainability. Where appropriate, SoH also constructs, equips, and supplies a modern Cardiac Surgical Center in that country to serve as an educational beacon for the surrounding region.
