About

The Craco Society was incorporated in 2007 as a non-profit organization under Massachusetts laws with a mission to preserve the culture, traditions, and history of Craco, the southern Italian hill town located in the Province of Matera and the region of Basilicata.
The Society seeks to educate individuals by holding meetings and issuing communications about the town and the townspeople.
Abandoned due to natural disasters, Craco is now a tourist attraction and a popular movie filming location.
Society members are located in Austria, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Besides holding annual reunion events the Society sponsors the feast of San Vincenzo Martire di Craco, in New York City.  The feast day of the patron saint of the Italian town was first publically recorded as being celebrated in Manhattan in 1901.  The Society believes this is now the second oldest Italian feast in New York.
The 114 year old statue of San Vincenzo is on display at the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood, 113 Baxter St., New York.  Residing with it is a primary relic that dates to 286AD.
