About

Union Avenue Opera (UAO) is a vibrant and professional opera company based in St. Louis, Missouri, known for presenting compelling productions in an intimate, acoustically rich setting. Founded in 1995, UAO has spent over three decades creating transformative opera experiences that bring together world-class artistry, local talent, and accessible programming for audiences across the region.

Each summer, UAO produces a vibrant Festival Season featuring a mix of beloved classics, lesser-known gems, and bold contemporary works—performed in their original languages with English supertitles. These fully staged productions are presented at the historic Union Avenue Christian Church, which is transformed into a 550-seat performance venue offering audiences an up-close and engaging operatic experience. The Festival Season attracts more than 170 artists, technicians, designers, and musicians, with over 80% coming from the greater St. Louis area—underscoring the company’s strong commitment to local talent.

UAO is especially proud to champion emerging artists, offering valuable opportunities to perform principal roles in a professional setting. Many singers who appear on the UAO stage go on to perform with major opera companies across the country. At the same time, UAO fosters deep relationships with established artists and creatives who return season after season.

In addition to its summer productions, UAO invests in community outreach and education year-round. Its *CRESCENDO!* program provides performance opportunities for college-level voice students, helping bridge the gap between academic training and the professional stage.

UAO believes that opera should be as diverse and dynamic as the community it serves. The company is dedicated to making opera approachable, affordable, and artistically relevant, breaking down barriers of access and expectation. Whether you're a seasoned opera lover or attending your first performance, Union Avenue Opera invites you to experience the power and passion of live opera in the heart of St. Louis.
