VICA identified youth disengagement from education as a target issue within our community, and working with the African Cultural Association of North America (ACANA) and Calvary Baptist Church Agape Outreach Services (AGAPE) developed the STAA Alternative Education Program in response to the increasing levels of violence and truancy that we have observed. STAA stands for Serving and Transforming Active Adult. This adult initiative is aimed at engaging high risk African and Caribbean immigrant and African American adults throughout the calendar school year who have problems with violence, truancy, behavioral challenges, or have dropped completely out of the school system. Currently we have about fifty adults who come to our center, and we are looking to expand this program to include even more adult as well as their families.
