About

The Purple Heart is the oldest active military decoration in the United States, awarded to service members wounded or killed in action against an enemy.

Its origins trace back to the American Revolutionary War when General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York. This was a purple cloth heart (edged in lace or binding) worn on the uniform, intended to recognize unusual gallantry, extraordinary fidelity, or essential service — notably, it was one of the first U.S. awards open to enlisted soldiers and non-commissioned officers rather than just officers.

The award was revived in 1932 by Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur, redesigning and renaming it the Purple Heart. Over time, criteria shifted to focus primarily on combat wounds or death. The Purple Heart symbolizes sacrifice in combat, with over a million awarded historically.

Purple Heart North Carolina is among the many PH groups across the nation comprising the National Purple Heart organization. Purple Heart NC is a 501c3 all-volunteer organization.

The mission of Purple Heart North Carolina is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat-wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families throughout North Carolina.
