About

The mission of The J.C. Coleman Foundation, Inc. is to improve the academics, life skills, and attitudes of at-risk  per-teens and teens through a variety of creative, innovative, non-traditional and collaborative support services.  We are dedicated to raising awareness of our cause and serving those in need.

We want kids to come off the streets and become active participants in our After-School Program. We want them to realize that their past does not have to dictate their future. We want to show these kids that they can be a vital part of a tight-knit community ( at the Center ) within their our larger community.

The J. C. Coleman Foundation, Inc. believe in improving community through education and through enriching young lives. We feel that opening students' worlds to new experiences through unconventional approaches to learning in a safe and positive atmosphere enhances their lives and ours as well.

Our goals are simple: to help children, inspire them to attain a higher level of accomplishment, spark the imagination,  provide a fun, safe, and positive environment for these youth to be a part of.

Our Values are: every life has equal value, all children are capable of learning, children should be rewarded for their efforts and progress,  respect must be modeled in order to be learned, every child should be given task at which they can succeed and also be challenged, and children should be rewarded for their efforts and progress.

Our staff have a strong commitment to serving the many constituents of our organization and focus their energies on those who take advantage of our program and services.

Our board represents a cross-section of our community and has a passion for our organization and those we serve. The members work hard to ensure long-term sustainability of our foundation and oversee that the funds raised affect those in need.

We work to raise awareness and help people affected by our cause.  Our success is measured in the number of people we can help with the quality of the program and services we provide. These services are fueled by our dedicated staff, caring volunteers and generous donors.

We offer a program and services to meet the needs of those affected by our cause. We help them and their families by providing a program, information and resources to assist in their journey.  We also help by raising awareness through public outreach and media.

We at The J.C. Coleman Foundation, are family to the After-School participants: we welcome the students to their "home away from home." They even receive a snack when they come in.

Our Free After-School Program has two primary components; the tutorial and the enrichment activity. When the children arrive after school, they are to start their homework, and our staff are right there with them, working with sometimes five to ten children at a time. Seven schools are represented: four elementary, two middle schools, and one high school.

After participants finish with homework, they gradually make their way to the other side of the room where a structured activity, or enrichment, is in progress. These activities, from Monday thru Friday, are presented as follows: Current Events, Arts and Crafts, Media Appreciation, Literacy and Sports and Recreation. These activities are designed to supplement their existing studies and to augment their world view.
Not only do these students get a snack from the J.C. Coleman Foundation, they are also treated to dinner as hosted by America's Second Harvest Food Bank.

Our Summer Program invites neighborhood kids and other community members to have a five day 8am to 4pm (sometimes 6pm) opportunity to be mentored by a team of positive, informed authority figures. These kids will not have idle time on their hands to get into trouble, drugs, sex, etc.

The Summer Camp Program  provides a safe environment and outlet for children and adolescents ages 6-13. Of course, social networking is important, but we at The J.C. Coleman Foundation, plan to offer structured activities so that the participants never quit learning. Additionally, the children will be given the opportunity to swim, go to the library, hear motivational speakers, be involved in volunteer work, get exercise through sports and other recreational activities, and enjoy the game room equipped with pool tables, foosball, and ping-pong tables. Most exciting is our plan for structured field trips.

In order to achieve our goals, we are engaged in a series of initiatives to raise awareness of our cause. Through our annual campaigns, people affected by our cause and their families receive much needed help.
