About

Blue Ridge Acupuncture Clinic was founded in 2003 by James C. Whittle, M.S., L.Ac., in Asheville, North Carolina. Called an "Expert in Chinese Medicine" by NBC News, James has treated thousands of patients with chronic pain and complex health conditions over more than two decades of clinical practice.
James holds a clinical master's degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine from Bastyr University and graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed eight months of advanced clinical training in Chinese hospitals as a graduate of the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine internship program, and has visited China eight times to study with leading physicians.
The clinic specializes in acupuncture, classical Chinese herbal medicine, and systems-based approaches to chronic and complex conditions including chronic pain, neuropathic pain, trigeminal neuralgia, sleep disorders, and neurovascular conditions. Treatment integrates multiple acupuncture styles including Japanese, five element, classical, and electroacupuncture, as well as auriculotherapy and a fully stocked Chinese herbal pharmacy.
In 2026, James published original independent research in Medical Hypotheses, an international peer-reviewed journal published by Elsevier. The paper, titled "The Trigeminal Triad: A Rate-Dependent Model Linking Neurovascular Compression, Vascular Pulsatility, and Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Trigeminal Neuralgia," proposes a systems-based hypothesis for why trigeminal neuralgia develops in some patients but not others with similar anatomy. The model integrates three interacting domains: structural vulnerability of the trigeminal nerve, elevated vascular pulsatility, and chronic intermittent hypoxia associated with sleep-disordered breathing.
Blue Ridge Acupuncture Clinic serves patients in Asheville, Western North Carolina, and globally through telemedicine and online health consultations.
