About

Started in 2009, Buffalo CarShare is a non-profit with 18 vehicles and 800 members.

We started with Buffalo CarShare in 2009, sharing over 24,000 trips and 700,000 miles in our first 5 years of service. The majority of these were taken to destinations relating to healthy food, medical appointments and job interviews.

We are experts in transportation innovation in Buffalo, as well as nationally, due to our extremely unique and diverse member population. Half of our members come from a household earning $25,000 or less, shattering industry averages.

We are also an industry leader in the use of 100% electric vehicles with four
Ford Focus Electrics in our fleet, thanks to a grant from NYSERDA. Because we are leaders in the non-profit model of CarSharing, we are looking to replicate this model in other cities. From 2014-15, we will be facilitating, managing, and consulting with the launch of Capital CarShare in Albany, NY. We hope that this will motivate similar cities to consider our model of CarSharing.

In 2013, we became the world’s first operator of a GPS-based BikeSharing system known as Social Bicycles. Last year, beta testers at the University at Buffalo took 2,500 rides. In 2014, we will be focusing on more rides and piloting demonstrations in the City of Buffalo and Albany. We hope this will motivate similar cities to consider our BikeSharing program.
