Friends of Negro Spirituals is an educational organization. Its membership includes individuals of any gender, ethnicity, race, color, creed, religion, or of political affiliation who share interests in learning and educating the public about the African-American and American heritage of Negro Spiritual folk songs and about those who have contributed and are contributing to its lasting life.

Friends of Negro Spirituals welcomes members.

Formed in 1998, the organization preserves Spirituals by educating the public about them and their history. Quarterly, it offers stimulating public educational forums that focuses on Negro Spirituals themes. Each one involves a knowledgeable speaker, demonstrations, and audience participation

The organization publishes a fascinating news journal, The Negro Spiritual, which is issued in April, August, and December of each year. Its contains a wide variety of uplifting educational sections, including Perspectives and Education, Featured Stories, The Soloist Speaks of Singing Spirituals, and The Negro Spirituals News.  The journal consists of exciting, informative articles, striving to enable communities to be aware of Spirituals events and to be knowledgeable and motivated about the heritage.

Periodically, the organization presents educational programs on the radio. It plans to offer Spirituals out reach workshops and Spirituals writing and public speaking competitions to attach young audiences. It also aims to disseminate Spirituals educational pamphlets. It assists other organizations in advertising Negro Spirituals events
