John Sundt is an AV Rated solo practitioner, ranked in the past as one of the Best Construction Lawyers in America by Best Lawyers.* John maintains a commercial practice covering general business law, with a focus on construction, procurement, regulatory compliance and privacy matters.
Licensed to practice in Arizona and Texas since 1988 John has a broad legal and business background. His construction experience is grounded on the time he spent with the Sundt Companies, a firm which grew out of the business started by his great grandfather in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1890. John left Sundt several years after they completed the company's transition to 100% employee ownership.
At Sundt, John spent 4 years managing it's Southern Arizona Office. During his tenure the group grew its annual volume and backlog some tenfold, while maintaining the lowest overhead and highest profit per capita of any building group profit center. The group also received awards recognizing their business ethics, the quality of their work and their dedication to a team approach.
Before becoming a manager, John served as Sundt's Senior Counsel. He handled contracts, helped with regulatory compliance and resolved claims. John also introduced the tax strategy that took the company to 100% employee ownership, eliminated the company’s payment of income tax, and effectively allowed sheltered savings to grow stock value for all employees. In the litigation area, he worked with outside counsel on case strategy and furnished in house support. He also served on Sundt's Leadership, ESOP, and Strategic Planning Committees; and the Board of Directors of M.M. Sundt Construction, Inc. Prior to joining the Sundt Companies in 1991, John was an associate with Snell & Wilmer.
At a state level, John currently serves on the Arizona Governor's Regulatory Review Council, is Vice Chair of the Arizona Housing Finance Authority and a Flinn Brown Fellow. Locally, he serves on the Pima County Bond Advisory Committee and in the DM50.
