Makarios Community School is the first alternative democratic free school in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Students 5 to 18 travel from all parts of the metroplex to participate in learning activities at the Grapevine campus. The campus accommodates up to 60 students with dedicated learning centers indoors and an acre of fenced in yard for outdoor play and exploration. A staff of six are responsible for administration, fundraising, marketing, facility management and mentoring students. Staff also organize and lead classes on a variety of topics. Day-to-day operation of the school is run by the democratic process using Parliamentary procedure in the weekly School Meeting and daily Judicial Committee. Students learn government processes, and gain leadership and public speaking skills by participating in these foundational activities of Makarios Community School.
