MatterHackers is part of the emerging Desktop 3D Printing market place, which is now growing revenues at an annual pace of 20-30% per year. For every printer sold the user needs three items, the printer, the control software and the designs/models to print.

MatterHackers is fulfilling all three needs of the consumer. We sell the 3D printers as well as the 3D printing consumables. Our “MatterControl” platform is the user interface to the printer and will enable the longer term vision is to become the go to source for Desktop 3D printing designs/models.

3D printer manufacturers use MatterControl to provide a clean, standard and consumer friendly user interface to their printers.

Designers will use “MatterControl” in the same manner as music artist use iTunes, the designers can create and upload their designs to “MatterControl” to distribute and monetize their 3D printer designs & models.

3D printer owners will use our service “MatterControl” to shop, purchase and use 3D designs just as they use iTunes for music.

Technology

In our 3D Printer & Consumables Store (both online & physical) we sell 3D printers from AirWolf, Orion and Type A Machines, as well as the consumables for 3D printing. This includes both plastic and nylon filament spools plus, various parts and accessories.

Our "MatterControl" platform provides a uniform consumer user interface to the growing number of 3D printers in the marketplace. Today each printer manufacturer has their own interface and for some none at all, leaving it to the consumer to find a way to make it all work. Our solution provides that one-stop user experience the mainstream consumer is used to and requires.

In addition, we license MatterControl to printer manufacturers. This provides time for the design marketplace to build momentum and for us to establish “MatterControl” as the destination source for those designs and the addition of the much larger revenue stream.

Story

Lars Brubaker had sold Reflexive Entertainment, a pioneering firm in the web-based distribution of video games to Amazon.com. While completing his earn-out at Amazon, Lars had been researching and observing the 3D printing marketplace. His vision was to take what he had created in the video game space, a digital store for video game designers to sell from and players to buy from, and do the same for the emerging Desktop 3D printing market.

Kevin Pope was the Controller at Reflexive Entertainment and had architected the acquisition by Amazon. After that acquisition, Kevin founded VentureBox, the developer of VentureAssist and a provider of agile software development services.

Michael Hurst is a former KPMG auditor who went on to work at Viacom providing SEC reporting. Michael desired to return to California from New York. Michael and Kevin had both attended Cal Poly SLO and had dreamed of creating a company together. Michael joined Kevin at VentureBox.

When Lars completed his earn-out at Amazon the three joined forces in September 2012 to found MatterHackers with the vision to become a leading force in the Desktop 3D printing marketplace.
