Based in California, Money Scholar is founded in 2008 by Christine Douglas, a mother of two and an advocate for financial literacy for children. The company aims to equip children with the right tools and knowledge to help themselves create a better financial future.
Money Scholar offers a line of designer piggy banks that teach kids the four pillars of smart money management – saving, investing, giving and spending. The products are made from durable poly resin and are hand painted with vibrant colors that engages children of all ages.
Each bank comes with a six-panel guide that jumpstarts conversation between parents and children on money matters. The guide includes investment types that are age appropriate for children and start-up activities that help form healthy financial habits.
In 2010, Money Scholar launched its blog at Wordpress (moneyscholar.wordpress.com) as a forum for parents who share the company’s vision of financial literacy for children. The blog contains valuable resources such as books, games and monthly posts that offer creative ideas for children to apply sound financial principles in every day situations.
With only one design in 2008, Money Scholar now offers 10 varieties, including the popular Bug Bank, the Classic Sports and Modern Sports Bank, Cheetah and Cow Print Bag, as well as the latest Diva Purse Bank and Race Car Bank. In 2011, Money Scholar will be adding new motifs such as music, surfing, collegiate, fire engines and princess.
Currently, Money Scholar Banks are found in upscale retail stores such as Nordstrom and fine children’s boutiques throughout the Carolinas, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, California and Georgia. Money Scholar is in preliminary stages of opening new distribution channels in 2011, making its coin banks available through specialty gift and department stores nationwide.
The banks are also available for purchase via their online store at www.moneyscholar.org.
