I dreamt it happened in New York City…

Her name was Jolie. She was so beautiful that it hurt Ryan to look at her for too long; his heart ached with love for her, but he was too shy. They had gone to college together and had both recently moved to the Big Apple, ready to face the new challenges of adulthood.

Ryan wanted more than just her camaraderie. He wanted to be her lover as well as her best friend. But every time the opportunity arose, when she had broken up with a boyfriend or they shared a quiet moment together, he froze. The next day, he would always kick himself.

One year, Valentines Day was approaching and he knew he simply couldn’t go on without saying something. As he walked through the East Village vowing to go through with his impulse this time, a glint caught his eye in a shop window. It was a beautiful crystal necklace. A sure sign. He sprung to action and bought the piece.

Ryan arranged to meet Jolie Feb. 14, making no mention of the occasion. They would convene at her place in Brooklyn Heights and walk to Lower Manhattan to see an art show.

As they were strolling across the Brooklyn Bridge, with the full moon behind him, Ryan knew this was the perfect moment he was waiting for. He stopped and turned to Jolie. Their eyes met.

“Jolie, I need to tell you something…”

“Yes?”

“But words aren’t enough.”

He pulled out the case he had buried in the breast of his winter coat and handed it to her. He was shaking, but not from the cold. She too trembled as she touched it, and almost let it drop.

When she opened it, Ryan instinctively went down to one knee. He hadn’t planned to – he thought that would be too corny. But suddenly it didn’t feel corny at all.

“You are everything to me. I love you.”

Secretly, she had been in love with him the whole time.

“I love you too.”

She knelt to him and they kissed, their eyes and the crystal reflecting the lovely moon.

Yes, it was just my daydream. Or was it?
