New York State Vehicle Inspections at Sholar Auto Repair
As a licensed Official Inspection Station, Sholar Auto Repair performs the required annual NYS vehicle inspections that every registered vehicle in New York must pass. Every vehicle registered in New York State must be inspected at least every 12 months, and the inspection must be completed before your current sticker expires or whenever the vehicle is registered under a new name.
Most inspections include two parts: a safety inspection and, for eligible vehicles, an emissions inspection. Most 1996 or newer gasoline-powered vehicles and most 1997 or newer diesel-powered vehicles under 8,501 pounds GVWR are subject to the OBDII emissions inspection, which checks the check engine light and the vehicle's on-board diagnostic system. Older vehicles that don't qualify for OBDII testing generally require a Low Enhanced emissions inspection instead.
Some vehicles don't need an emissions inspection at all. Vehicles less than two model years old, more than 25 model years old, or certain diesel-powered vehicles under specific weight thresholds are exempt from the emissions portion of the inspection. A safety inspection, however, is required for essentially every registered vehicle in the state, with no general exemption.
Inspection fees are set by New York State and vary depending on vehicle type and weight. Safety inspection fees generally range from about $6 to $20, while emissions inspection fees range from about $11 to $27 depending on the vehicle. Ask our team for the exact fee for your specific vehicle.
Keeping your inspection current matters. If your inspection sticker is expired 60 days or less, you can face a fine between $25 and $50; if it's expired more than 60 days, or if there's no sticker at all, the fine ranges from $50 to $100, plus a mandatory state surcharge. An expired inspection can also prevent you from renewing your vehicle's registration, so staying on schedule saves you both money and hassle.
