Deceleration Technologies puts the "Brake Lights" in Truck Safety
Grand Forks, ND - Deceleration Technologies, LLC has developed new technology to activate brake lights on heavy trucks when drivers use alternative braking methods, such as downshifting or engine braking. Slow-N-TellTM activates brake lights based on the truck's rate of deceleration instead of depending on the driver to step on the brake pedal, an action that is not often performed by professional drivers.
Brake lights are currently only activated by stepping on the brake pedal. Since truck drivers generally downshift or "Jake Brake" to slow down and neither method requires stepping on the brake pedal, the brake lights remain dark when decelerating. By illuminating the truck's brake lights, Slow-N-TellTM Technology will give following drivers an additional 5 or more seconds to react to the truck slowing down when truck drivers use these or other alternative braking methods.
Each year, over 400,000 trucks are involved in highway accidents. Over 18 percent of these are rear end accidents. Scott Ault, President of Deceleration Technologies believes that a large number of these accidents, possibly as many as 25%, could be avoided if brake lights on trucks were more than just required decorations.
Drivers using Slow-N-TellTM feel that other drivers give them more room in traffic and "road rage" toward them and their trucks is all but eliminated when they use their brake lights than before Slow-N-TellTM was installed.
