About

Southmayd Home, Inc. is a nonprofit residential care community for women age 60 and older, located in the historic Overlook neighborhood of Waterbury, Connecticut. Founded in 1898 by Sarah Donaldson, we are one of the longest-standing nonprofits of our kind in Connecticut and have been providing affordable, dignified, community-centered care for senior women for over 125 years.

Our story begins with a simple but powerful belief. In 1889, our founder Sarah Donaldson watched a dear friend leave Waterbury simply because no suitable housing existed for her in the city she called home. Sarah refused to accept it. With ten dollars of her own money and the support of 99 other Waterbury women, she opened a bank account and set out to build something that would last. On September 26, 1898, Southmayd Home welcomed its very first resident, an elderly blind woman who simply wanted to stay in her community. That founding spirit has never left us.

Today, Southmayd Home operates from a beautiful three-story residence on Columbia Boulevard, the same property the Board acquired in 1916, the year Sarah Donaldson passed away at the age of 83. The building opened its doors to 35 residents in 1925 and has been a cornerstone of the Waterbury community ever since.

What makes Southmayd Home different is how we operate. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, every dollar we receive is reinvested directly into the lives of our residents. We answer to no shareholders and accept no outside influence. We operate entirely independently of Medicare, which means every decision we make is guided by what is best for the women in our care, not by outside reimbursement requirements or insurance mandates.

For over 125 years, we have honored our founder's commitment to affordability by funding approximately half of every resident's living costs. This is not a discount or a temporary program. It is a promise we have kept since 1898, because we believe no woman should ever have to leave the community she loves simply because of finances.

We are not a medical facility. We are a home. A warm, connected, family-like environment where senior women share meals, tend the garden, celebrate milestones, and build genuine friendships. Our residents are independent women who are ready for the safety, community, and personalized support that comes with residential care. We provide that support with dignity, compassion, and deep respect for each woman's individuality.

Our team includes dedicated staff and an active Board of Directors who are deeply invested in the mission and the women we serve. We also welcome volunteers from the community, including individuals, students, and community groups who want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents.
