About

The Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) plays a vital role in shaping academic and professional standards across disciplines at the intersection of technology, management, and applied engineering. Founded in 1967 as the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT), the organization originally supported educators, students, and professionals in Industrial Technology—focused on the practical application of engineering principles in industrial settings.

As technology advanced and workforce needs evolved, NAIT broadened its scope. In 2008, it rebranded as ATMAE to better reflect its expanded mission, encompassing Technology Management, Operations Management, Engineering Management, Applied Engineering, and Engineering Technology. This evolution underscored ATMAE’s commitment to aligning academic programs with industry demands and preparing graduates to manage complex technological systems.

A major achievement came in 2020 when ATMAE successfully advocated for the addition of three new Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes:

Applied Engineering (14.0103)

Applied Engineering Technologies/Technicians (15.0001)

Science/Technology Management (52.0216)

These additions marked a turning point in how these disciplines are recognized in U.S. higher education, boosting visibility and legitimacy. ATMAE remains the only accreditor of Science/Technology Management and Applied Engineering programs, further solidifying its leadership in these fields.

Today, ATMAE is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit that sets national standards for academic accreditation, professional certification, and workforce development. It is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), affirming the quality and rigor of its accreditation standards.

ATMAE also supports research and knowledge sharing through its official peer-reviewed publication, The Journal of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (JTMAE). Formerly the Journal of Industrial Technology (1984–2011), JTMAE publishes scholarly and applied research, serving faculty, students, and professionals in academia and industry.

Now a global community, ATMAE includes educators, administrators, students, and industry professionals. Its offerings—from accreditation and certification to its annual conference and scholarships—continue to support excellence in an ever-evolving technological world.

Through innovation and a commitment to quality, ATMAE remains a leading force in advancing technology, management, and applied engineering education.
