About The Emancipator

The Emancipator is a digital commentary platform dedicated to achieving racial justice in America and beyond. Co-founded by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and Bina Venkataraman, The Emancipator features original content from leading scholars, journalists, and community members to explore solutions to racial inequality and its intersections. A collaboration between the Boston Globe and Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research, The Emancipator reimagines the nation’s first abolitionist newspapers — for a new day.

While other outlets tend to cover racial equality on a la carte or when there’s breaking news around the subject, this is what we do every single day. Our contributors move beyond daily reporting and dive into complex, systemic issues - providing historical context, clarification and research-based solutions often missing from today’s news coverage.

We curate and commission original content from the nation’s leading antiracist scholars, journalists, and community experts, showcasing missing and under-amplified voices - past and present - and demonstrating how they reveal the way forward. Our work is intersectional and inclusive, illustrating how the convergence of race, gender, class, and sexuality impacts us all.
