The bird park was started simply as a place for Sandy Kirkconnell to keep his Macaws and other birds that needed a home.  He started building large open outdoor cages and soon neighbors started to visit and help.
Today, the bird park is known as Uncle Sandy's Macaw Bird Park Inc and run by a board of directors.  There are no paid positions and all duties are performed by volunteers.
The purpose of this organization is to provide educational information to the public regarding owning and maintaining a parrot.  This is done through the use of public displays and appearances as well as the tourist attraction of the park tours.
