WORLDwrite's Key projects for 2008 include:
Global Promotion and Distribution of the Pricking the Missionary Position film series, especially to universities, colleges and schools. These films put our peers' aspirations on the map and challenge the poverty of ambition the West has for the developing world.
London Behind the Scenes is a new free tour guide training programme. It involves developing online, on foot and on film alternative tours in London's East End. The programme emphasises global issues and connections. Newcomers to the UK are especially welcome to join this programme. The free tour guide training takes place one evening per week and on some weekends, starting in March. It runs for approximately 24 sessions.
Worldbites aims, in the first instance, to develop a volunteer-run online news channel with monthly newsreels.
Ticking our Boxes: Volunteering is officially "good". Why? What's good about voluntary work, what's bad, why do we do it, what impact does it have, what's great, what's loathsome? From up-front interviews to personal stories to expert evidence, this is a film made by volunteers who have questioned, probed and committed their findings to film. Made to professional broadcast standard, this documentary uncovers aspects of youth volunteering that rarely get a hearing.
The Battle of Ideas is a major festival of ideas, and for the last few years WORLDwrite has contributed to it. We aim to do so again in 2008. We are putting our energies into a new strand examining "Emerging Economies" and hope to complete a film entitled Flush It which will examine concerns about "water security", as well as a series of shorts.
Global Appeals is about WORLDwrite putting its money where its mouth is. We do believe that we should do what we can to help our peers, without pretending that it alone will solve North-South inequality. We don't believe in ethical gifts or prescriptions for small-scale demeaning projects. We do believe in handing over the cash with no strings to our partners, friends and peers in developing countries.
We also provide active volunteers with film training or top-up training as needed so that they can make or complete our films.
