On CNN Bill Maher defined faith as “the purposeful suspension of rational thinking.” (Oct 8, 2010) While on the one hand this may correctly define what many people mean when they speak of faith, it certainly does not represent what the Bible teaches about faith.
Rational thinking is in fact the medium by which the biblical presentation, propositions and teaching is presented to mankind. Thus the we have a proliferation of Christian Bookstores and literature today; and the many Christian authors are appealing to the rational mind with their ideas and arguments. God’s appeal to mankind is an appeal to man’s faculty of reason. In Isaiah 1:18 He says, “Come now, and let us reason together.” But in Isaiah 55:8 He says, “… My thoughts are not your thoughts.” Here God is calling man to a different way of thinking; a way of thinking that is not common to the nature of the human creature; a way of thinking that is characteristic of the being who God is. Therefore God further states in verse 9, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are … My thoughts than your thoughts.” Such thinking consists of the transcendent application of the laws of reasoning we are familiar with which govern our approach to all successful intellectual inquiry and science. And it is God’s appeal in Christ that makes this all possible. In Christ we are enabled to comprehend the divine perspective, understanding and wisdom. By delivering the believer from the consequences and power of sin Jesus has freed us from the infirmities that corrupt our use of the intellectual apparatus God has provided us with in creation. Aren’t you glad that you’ve been set free from the limitations of a mind under the power of sin to the intellectual freedom that may only be found in Christ Jesus. (Romans 7:14-8:6)
