About |
Minimalist phone is a Munich-based phone app with a custom home screen for Android phones that replaces the default home screen. The app is primarily used as a way for users to reduce screen time. As of June 2022, the app has had 300,000 downloads worldwide.
History:
Founder Martin Morávek launched it during the COVID-19 pandemic as constant isolation had many people worried about their increased reliance – and addiction – to their phones.
Layout:
The app’s custom phone screen eliminates much of the noise and clutter of the typical smartphone layout. Notably, the minimalistic user interface employed by the app does not showcase icons.
Features:
Minimalist phone has multiple features that allow the user to customize their screen time experience. In-app time reminders ask users how much time they want to spend in an app when they initially open it - and the app will remind the user when the time limit is up. This allows users to avoid the “endless scroll” experience that can quickly turn an intended five-minute session into an hour. App blocker allows users to block an app completely – users get to choose the duration, whether that’s 10 hours or 10 days. The hide app feature allows users to still access their desired app, but forces users to take multiple steps to access it – reducing the likelihood of mindlessly opening and checking apps throughout the day. Monochrome mode removes colors from a user’s phone screen, instead rendering it in black and white. This causes visual content to be less attractive and stimulating and serves as a constant reminder to the user that they are on their phone. Finally, the notification filter can be used to hide unnecessary notifications and hide them under a single notification.
Languages:
Currently, the app is available in five languages (English, German, French, Spanish, and Chinese).
