About

“Out of the Fire” is a documentary film by Courtenay Singer that gives a rare look into the making of wood-fired pottery. The film follows potter Kevin Crowe, his apprentice Krista Loomans and others during the four-day firing of Crowe’s Japanese-style wood-fired kiln at Tye River Pottery in Amherst, Virginia.

Along with portraying the camaraderie, techniques and drama of the firing, Singer’s film explores the drive to create, the importance of community, and the roles of risk taking and authenticity in creating a life and art full of meaning.
