About

Photometrics AI develops software that optimizes street lighting performance through networked lighting controls. The platform uses GIS-based Target Lighting Layers and AI-driven analytics to determine optimal operating parameters for each luminaire, delivering energy savings while maintaining lighting standards compliance.
Cities across the United States operate millions of streetlights, representing one of the largest municipal energy expenditures and sources of artificial light at night. Most networked lighting control systems are underutilized, running simple time-clock schedules rather than optimizing output based on actual conditions. Photometrics AI addresses this gap by calculating what each light should do based on spatial context: road classification, pedestrian activity, adjacent land use, and real-time conditions.
The platform works with existing networked lighting control infrastructure from manufacturers including Ubicquia, LED Roadway Lighting, and others. No new hardware is required. Photometrics AI analyzes the lighting network, generates optimized dimming schedules, and pushes configurations to the control system. Cities see results without capital investment in new equipment.
Key capabilities include:
Target Lighting Layers: GIS-based photometric calculations that define optimal light levels for every location based on IES RP-8 standards, road geometry, and land use context.
AI-Accelerated Optimization: Machine learning models trained on spatial context files to rapidly calculate dimming parameters across large lighting networks.
Event-Driven Scheduling: Integration with external data sources to adjust lighting based on real-world conditions, including bird migration forecasts from Cornell Lab of Ornithology's BirdCast platform, MLB game schedules, and weather data.
Standards Compliance: Calculations aligned with Illuminating Engineering Society standards to ensure safety requirements are met while eliminating over-lighting.
The company was founded by Ari Isaak, a certified GIS Professional (GISP) and Certified Facility Lighting Consultant (CFLC) with 25 years of GIS experience and 17 years focused on street lighting. Through his consulting firm Evari GIS Consulting, Isaak has provided lighting design and GIS services to major cities including San Jose, San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston, working on the conversion of over 5 million streetlights.
Photometrics AI is based in San Diego, California. The technology is protected by U.S. Patent 9,894,736 with additional patents pending.
