Everyone has a theory on how to close the achievement gap. This is ours:
■ The achievement gap will be eliminated only when the quality of instruction in the classroom improves for all students.
■ The quality of instruction will improve at scale when school leaders know how to observe and analyze high quality instruction and can help teachers develop the expertise they need to teach all of their students effectively.
The education community has many different reasons for its interest in closing the achievement gap. We have one: equity. We are committed to social justice, which for us translates to the success of all children and youth in our nation’s schools. We believe that we can and must eliminate the differences in achievement related to race, class, language, and disability.
At the Center for Educational Leadership (CEL), we offer opportunities for teachers, coaches, school administrators and district leaders to put our theory into practice. At CEL we believe that with the right learning opportunities, all students, regardless of background, can and will achieve at high levels. The goal of CEL's work is to help teachers, coaches, principals and district leaders to develop their own shared vision of high quality instruction and to be able to deliver it consistently for all of their students.
